In this study of the Parthenon’s northern colonnade, Frederic Edwin Church uses architectural lines to create depth and calm. Warm beige and brown stone stands against a muted grey-blue sky, while small green plants emerge from the cracks.

Church made North Peristyle of the Parthenon, Athens in April 1869 during his stay in Athens. The scene shows the northern colonnade viewed from the west. The original was made with oil paint and graphite on paperboard and belongs to Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Visible brushstrokes give the study a lively quality, and the pale edge of the reproduction is part of the motif.

Choose paper or another material

We make your reproduction to order. Choose from three different paper types, or explore options including wood, aluminium, acoustic panels, paper mounted on acrylic and canvas on an 18 mm stretcher frame. The material helps shape the character of the picture, from the fine surface of paper to the tactile quality of canvas.

Make the framing your own

A light wood frame suits the sandy stone and gives the image a natural finish. Smoked oak highlights the darker areas of the columns, while a muted blue frame can pick up the cool tones of the sky. An off-white mount adds space around the original pale edge.

Try different frames and mounts in the preview. You can choose a centred or off-centre position and adapt the proportions to your wall, giving the perspective of the colonnade room to stand out.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0631/6634/9482/files/parthenons-soejlegang-athen-ramme-20261028.jpg?v=1793186348
