In Standing Bedouin Figure, Frederic Edwin Church creates a striking figure study with a small, carefully chosen palette. Red shoes and small red details enliven the dark silhouette, while visible brushstrokes add movement and texture to the picture.

The study was made in 1869–1870 with oil paint and graphite on paperboard. According to Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, it depicts Church’s neighbour Benjamin Bellows Grant Stone, who posed in Bedouin clothing. The work was made in Hudson, USA, and is part of the museum’s collection. The pale edge of the image shown is part of the motif.

Choose paper or another material

We make your reproduction to order. Choose from three different paper types, or explore options including wood, aluminium, acoustic panels, paper mounted on acrylic and canvas on an 18 mm stretcher frame. Paper brings out the fine details of the study, while canvas provides a more tactile surface.

Make the framing your own

A light wood frame complements the golden shades of the image. Smoked oak emphasises the deep earthy tones, while a black frame brings together the dark clothing and the shadow behind the figure. An off-white mount gives the tall composition room to breathe and highlights the original pale edge.

Try the combinations in the preview and choose a centred or off-centre position.
