About the frame

If you want a frame with depth, a box frame is the obvious choice. This type is also called an aquarium frame, deep frame, frame with spacing, frame with spacers – and internationally often a shadow box frame. Box frames are ideal when you want space between the artwork and the glass, e.g. for art with relief, objects, collage or other three-dimensional works.

Our box frames are made as handmade frames in Denmark, always to order and in exactly the size you want. We can produce frames with depth from 20×20 cm and all the way up to 120×160 cm, whether you are looking for an object frame, a display frame or a frame for art with distance to the glass.

When you order, you enter the size of the glass. The glass goes 5 mm in under the frame all the way around, which ensures a stable and elegant look. If, for example, you order a box frame / deep frame of 50×50 cm, the visible glass area will be 49×49 cm, while the total outer size will be 51×51 cm. This is because the profiles of the frame are 20 mm wide.

As standard, our frames with spacing are delivered with white, acid-free insert paper. If you want a more stable background – or a colored solution – you can add a passepartout without a cutout, which works perfectly as a backing board in a box frame. Please note that the white spacers match the color of the white passepartout better than that of the insert paper.

The integrated spacers create the characteristic depth of the frame. The spacers are 14 mm wide, which means that there is 14 mm of space between the glass and the backing board – ideal for artwork where you want a distinct spatial effect and an exclusive look.

Profile

You can choose between seven different kinds of wood for your box frame: Light oak, dark oak, solid untreated oak, black wood, white wood, silver-colored wood and gold-colored wood. All the profiles are 20 mm wide and 30 mm deep.

Glass

We offer three types of high-quality real glass for our box frames. We have chosen not to use acrylic glass in our box frames, as it is too flexible to give the optimal result.

You can choose between standard glass, non-reflective glass or museum glass. The latter two have virtually no reflections in the glass. The non-reflective glass is slightly matte, whereas the museum glass is completely clear and in addition protects with at least 70% against UV rays - approx. twice as much as the other types of glass.

Passepartout

As standard, a visible backing board in brown masonite is included in the box frame. If you want the backing board to stand out, a passepartout without a cutout is recommended. The spacers are designed to match a white passepartout, but other colors can give an exciting and more individual look.

If the artwork is to be placed behind a passepartout with approx. 5 mm overlap, you must choose a model with a cutout. Here the following must be specified:

Cutout size
The cutout should be 1 cm smaller than the size of the artwork in both height and width.

If you want both a passepartout with a cutout and one without, so the artwork can lie on top, the cutout in the front one must be approx. 1 cm larger than the artwork. Remember to purchase an extra passepartout without a cutout (you can do that here).

Position of the cutout
Choose between a centered cutout, a top-placed cutout (same distance to the top and sides) or no cutout.

The outer dimensions will always fit the frame.

All passepartouts are made from 1,5 mm acid-free quality board.
