Mediterranean holly in black and white by Karl Blossfeldt, who was a German artist with a great fascination for flowers, leaves and plants. The Mediterranean holly is also called Eryngium bourgatii, it is a flowering plant in the Apiaceae family that can be found in Morocco, Lebanon, Turkey, France and Spain. It is a herbaceous perennial plant that grows 15-45 cm tall. The spherical blue flower heads have spiny bracts, as seen in this photograph from 1928. The original from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is enlarged 5 times. The work is part of Urformen der Kunst (1928).
