About the poster
Two tall palms frame the view of Dubrovnik’s pale city walls and terracotta rooftops across the deep blue Adriatic. The green palm fronds and warm, russet-brown trunks stand against the blue sky, while garden walls and foliage create depth in the foreground. Hanns Wagula brings together the light of the south and the allure of travel in a striking Art Deco design.
The poster promotes Dubrovnik with the German text “Die Perle der jugoslavischen Adria” – the pearl of the Yugoslav Adriatic. Simplified shapes, broad areas of colour and elegant green lettering give the poster a calm, graphic presence that works beautifully in both classic interiors and modern homes.
The design was created by Hanns Wagula around 1930. The poster was printed by Lit. Z. T. Narodnih Novina in Zagreb and measures 63 × 95 cm. The exact printing year of this particular copy has not been confirmed.
Condition
8/10 – Good condition with light patina and very soft folds. There is paper loss from a tear at the upper right corner, along with smaller areas of damage to the adjoining right paper margin. The damage is visible in the detail photographs and has been taken into account in the condition rating.
Framing
A slim dark wood frame highlights the warm colours of the palm trunks and creates an attractive contrast with the blue tones of the sea. An off-white mount gives the poster breathing space, allowing the artwork, typography and original paper margins to remain visible within the frame.
