About the poster

Two trains pass each other at the Great Salt Lake beneath a golden sky with soaring gulls. The black steam locomotive contrasts sharply with the lake’s blue water and the pink and purple mountains, while passengers on the other train’s open observation platform enjoy the scenery. Maurice Logan brings together the excitement of travel, spectacular landscapes and the power of the railway in one striking composition.

The poster advertises Southern Pacific and the journey across Utah’s Great Salt Lake on the Overland Route. Bold blue lettering and warm areas of colour give the design a strong graphic presence that suits both traditional interiors and modern homes.

The design dates to around 1928. The exact printing date of this copy has not been confirmed. The poster measures 40.6 × 58.5 cm and bears Maurice Logan’s printed signature in the lower right corner.

Condition

8/10 – Beautiful condition with clear colours and limited age-related patina. There is a localised surface tear where the pale upper margin meets the yellow image area. The damage is shown in the detail photograph and is reflected in the condition rating.

Framing

A slim dark wooden frame complements the locomotive’s deep tones and creates a warm contrast with the yellow sky. An off-white passepartout gives the poster breathing room, allowing the lettering, image and original paper margins to remain visible.
