About the poster
An illustrated world map filled with little stories. Pink landmasses sit against a muted blue sea, and the continents are populated with figures, animals, buildings and vehicles. Ships and aeroplanes cross the oceans, a train travels through Asia, and a sea god with a trident presides over imaginative sea creatures at the bottom.
The map is a decorative glimpse of its time, blending geography with humour and the period’s stereotypical depictions of the world’s peoples. Its many details invite closer exploration, while the wide landscape format makes the poster well suited to a space above a desk or a low bookcase.
The poster measures 68 × 33 cm and is reported to date from the 1950s. It bears the name Bergenholtz at the lower right and the Esselte Reklam mark at the lower left. The exact printing year has not been confirmed. The light paper margins and visible marks around the image area have been preserved.
About the artist
The signature points to the Swedish illustrator and advertising artist Gunnar Bergenholtz (1912–2006), who studied at Konstfack and worked at Esselte Reklam. He also designed posters for organisations including Skansen. However, the attribution of this particular map to Gunnar Bergenholtz has not been conclusively documented.
Condition
10/10 – Perfect condition with beautiful patina. The warm aged tone of the paper enhances the poster’s character and complements the blue and pink colours of the design. See the detail photographs for the paper, printing and margins.
Framing
A slim smoked oak frame highlights the map’s muted colours. A cream passepartout (also called a mount or mat), used as a backing, gives the paper breathing space and leaves the original margins visible.
This is simply our suggestion. You can explore the framing options yourself and order your chosen frame and passepartout with the poster. We always ship lithographs and frames separately to protect the poster should the frame be damaged in transit. Inserting the poster into the frame yourself is relatively straightforward, and we are happy to help if you have any questions about mounting it.
