About the poster

A father and son sit side by side in striped pyjamas, each holding up a red apple. The father’s golden dressing gown with blue lapels, the boy’s red slippers and the large apples in the foreground give the design a warm, lively palette. Above them, “New Zealand Apples” appears in bold blue lettering, while the white script “Regular pals!” emphasises the joy and companionship of the scene.

The poster advertises New Zealand apples through a familiar everyday moment, connecting the fruit with family life and good daily habits. Its combination of storytelling illustration, fresh fruit colours and decorative lettering makes it particularly suited to a kitchen or dining room.

This original colour lithograph was designed by Edward Cole and dates from the 1930s. The poster measures 38 × 51 cm and bears the artist’s printed signature at the lower right. The exact printing year has not been confirmed.

About the artist

Edward Francis Cole (1894–1979) was a British commercial artist born in Hackney, London. He created advertising for brands including Weetabix and Ovaltine and moved to South Africa in the late 1940s. His work included several poster designs promoting New Zealand apples.

In “Regular pals!”, Cole uses smiles, eye contact and the repeated red apples to connect the figures with the product. Carefully rendered fabric folds and glossy fruit bring the illustration to life, while the large headline makes the advertising message immediately clear.

Condition

9/10 – Attractive, well-preserved condition with strong colours. There are several edge tears along the right-hand side, together with small areas of paper loss at the outer edge. The damage is visible in the detail photographs and has been taken into account in the condition rating.

Framing

A slim dark wood or smoked oak frame picks up the darker tones in the design and creates an attractive contrast with the red apples and pale background. Cream-coloured passepartout board, also called mountboard or matboard, used as a background gives the poster breathing space while keeping its original paper margins visible.

This is simply our suggestion. You can explore the framing options yourself and order your chosen frame and passepartout with the poster. We always ship lithographs and frames separately to protect the poster if the frame is damaged in transit. Putting the poster into the frame yourself is relatively straightforward, and we are happy to help if you have any questions about fitting it.
