About the poster
Original German travel poster / lithograph from 1938 for the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The poster measures 42 × 59 cm and depicts the iconic cog railway and the winter landscape around Zugspitze, rendered in a beautiful and atmospheric Art Deco-inspired style with clear colour fields, dramatic mountain formations, and elegant details.
The composition is divided into two large winter motifs. The upper part shows skiers in front of the snow-capped alpine peaks and the hotel buildings at the mountain station, while the lower motif shows the train through the snow-covered landscape with the majestic mountains in the background. The warm yellow sky tones contrast beautifully with the cool blue and white hues of the snow, giving the poster an almost cinematic expression.
In the middle, you'll find the original winter timetable for the 1937/38 season with the text "Winter-Fahrplan 1937/38", making the poster both decorative and historically interesting. The motif exudes the alpine tourism culture of the era and the romantic notion of winter holidays in the Bavarian Alps before the war.
The lithograph was printed by Herm. Sonntag & Co. in Munich and appears as an exceptionally well-preserved example with impressive colour intensity and very few signs of age.
