About the frame

This box frame in matte black wood is designed for a sharp, uncompromising look, where the focus is fully on the artwork. The deep, matte surface absorbs light rather than reflecting it and creates a calm, graphic frame that highlights contrasts, colors and details alike.

The surface is uniform and without visible wood grain, which gives the frame a precise and modern look. This makes it particularly suitable for photography, minimalist graphics and artworks where the frame should be present – but never take attention away from the artwork.

The box frame, also known as an aquarium frame or a frame with spacing, is built with air between the glass and the work. This distance creates a striking spatial effect and gives the artwork depth and presence, without appearing heavy.

The frame is made in our Danish workshop with great precision. The 20 mm wide front profile and a total depth of 30 mm give a tight and balanced look. The front overlaps the glass by 5 mm and ensures that the artwork sits stably and precisely in the frame.

The integrated 14 mm spacers keep the artwork clear of the glass and support the three-dimensional look, while the work is protected against contact with the glass surface.

The dimensions of the frame are always stated based on the size of the glass and the backing board and correspond to the artwork you want framed. The box frame comes as standard with white, acid-free insert paper, and you can add a passepartout without a cutout for a more striking or graphic look.

If you want the frame in a specific size or have special wishes for its construction, it can also be ordered in custom sizes.

Glass

The glass plays a decisive role for both the visual look and the protection of your artwork. For box frames we recommend three types of real glass with different properties. We also offer acrylic glass, but do not recommend it for use in box frames.

Standard glass
A classic glass with clear reproduction and visible reflections, which gives a traditional look.

Non-reflective glass
Minimizes glare effectively and creates a calmer and more uniform look, even in rooms with a lot of light. The glass is, however, slightly matte, which is the drawback of this glass.

Museum glass
An almost invisible glass with completely clear, reflection-free properties and very high color accuracy. The museum glass also provides at least 70% UV protection.

Passepartout

The box frame comes as standard with a visible backing board in brown masonite. If you want to use this as part of the look, we recommend adding a passepartout without a hole. The inner spacers match a white passepartout in color, but other colors can give a more personal and contrasting look.

If your artwork is to be placed behind a passepartout (with approx. 5 mm overlap), you need to choose a variant with a hole. Here you need to consider the following:

Cutout size
The hole should be 1 cm smaller than the dimensions of the artwork in both height and width, so that an overlap of approx. 5 mm is achieved all the way around.

If you want both a classic passepartout with a hole and one without a hole behind it, so the picture can lie on top, the hole in the front one must be approx. 1 cm larger than the artwork. You also need to purchase an extra passepartout without a hole (you can do that here).

Position of the hole
You can choose between a centered hole, a top-positioned hole (with equal distance to the top and sides) or no hole at all.

The outer dimensions always correspond to the dimensions of the frame.

All passepartouts are produced in 1,5 mm acid-free quality cardboard.
