About the frame

This box frame in dark oak veneer is created for artworks that call for warmth, depth and weight in their look. The surface has a characteristic reddish sheen, which gives the frame a more intense and inviting tone than classic oak - without appearing heavy. The wood grain is calm and uniform, which gives a controlled and predictable look that lets the artwork play the leading role.

The box frame - also known as an aquarium frame or a frame with spacing - is built with a clear distance between glass and artwork. This creates an elegant spatial effect in which the work is given space around it and is experienced with greater depth and presence.

The frame is made in our Danish workshop with the same construction and precision as our other box frames. The 20 mm wide front profile combined with a total depth of 30 mm gives a solid, balanced look that works particularly well for photography, graphic prints and artworks with darker colors or warm tones. The front overlaps the glass by 5 mm and ensures that the artwork sits firmly and precisely in the frame.

The integrated 14 mm spacer strips keep the artwork at a distance from the glass and add depth to the composition without dominating. At the same time, the construction protects the work by preventing direct contact with the glass.

The frame's size is always stated based on the size of the glass and the backing board and corresponds to the artwork you want framed. The box frame comes as standard with white, acid-free insert paper. If you want a more striking or colored look, you can add a passepartout without a cutout.

If you have special requirements for size or construction, the frame can also be ordered in a custom size - made precisely to your needs.

Glass

The glass is of great importance for both the experience of the artwork and the long-term protection. For box frames, we recommend three different types of real glass, each with its own properties. Acrylic glass is also part of our range, but is not recommended for box frames.

Standard glass
A clear glass with a classic appearance, where reflections are visible and colors are rendered naturally.

Non-reflective glass
Reduces glare effectively and gives a calmer and more uniform look - even in rooms with a lot of light. However, the glass is slightly matte, unlike the completely clear museum glass, which is also almost as reflection-free.

Museum glass
An exclusive glass that appears almost invisible thanks to its completely clear, reflection-free properties. At the same time, the museum glass provides at least 70% UV protection and ensures high color accuracy.

Passepartout

By default, the box frame comes with a visible backing board in brown masonite. If you want to let this be part of the presentation, you should choose a passepartout without a cutout. The spacer strips are matched to a white passepartout, but you can advantageously choose other colors for a different visual look.

If you want to place your artwork behind a passepartout with overlap (approx. 5 mm), you must choose a version with a cutout. This requires the following choices:

Cutout size
We recommend that the cutout size is 1 cm smaller than the actual size of the artwork in both height and width.

If you want a floating effect, you can combine a passepartout with a cutout and one without. In this case, the cutout must be approx. 1 cm larger than the artwork, and you must buy an extra passepartout without a cutout (you can do that here), on top of which the artwork is placed.

Position of the cutout
Choose between a centered cutout, a top-positioned cutout (with a larger bottom margin) or no cutout.

The outer sizes always match the size of the frame.

All passepartouts are made from 1,5 mm acid-free board of high quality.
