Original vintage lithograph designed by John Pike (1911 - 1979) promoting Jamaica and the British West Indies. The poster shows a pirate standing on a beach while a crew member buries a treasure chest.

Jamaica was originally inhabited by the indigenous Arawak and Taíno peoples. The Arawaks are an Indian tribe from South America, which spread out on the Caribbean islands around the year 300. Around the 16th century, all the tribes were exterminated from the Caribbean islands.

Jamaica came under Spanish rule after the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1494. The island remained part of Spain until 1655, when England conquered it and named it Jamaica.

The American artist John Pike studied at the Cape Cod School of Art, and then moved to Jamaica in 1933, where he lived for five years and, among other things, designed this poster.

Condition

9/10 - Moisture damage on the right side, which you can hardly see. Otherwise very nice condition.
