Belgian / French travel poster from the shipping company Red Star Line which was founded in 1871 as a joint venture between International Navigation Company of Philadelphia and Société Anonyme de Navigation Belgo-Américaine in Antwerp. The company's main ports were Antwerp in Belgium, Cherbourg in France, Liverpool and Southampton in the United Kingdom and New York City and Philadelphia in the United States.
The ship on the poster is SS Belgenland, which has an exciting history. The ship was originally commissioned by the Red Star Line, but was taken over during the construction of the White Star Line when World War I started, and converted into a troop ship. After the war, she returned American troops across the Atlantic until 1921, when she was transferred to Liverpool. In 1922, she was towed to Belfast, where work on her reconstruction began. She was awarded the Red Star Line and renamed Belgenland. The ship was Red Star Line's largest and most luxurious ship. She remained on her route for a decade, and in 1924 she embarked on a 133-day world cruise - one of the longest attempts at a luxury craft at the time - advertised as "The Largest Ship to Circle the Globe".
The condition of the poster is really good. There is only a small tear in the top, insignificant folds and a scratch on the left side as well as general patina.
We have seen some English version before, but never this French language version. At the time of writing, none of them can be purchased elsewhere on the internet.
Frame is not included in the price. See our large selection of exclusive frames that can be made precisely to the poster.
