Scandinavian American Line – original lithograph from 1926
A large transatlantic liner cuts through blue waves under a golden sky. The dark hull, red funnels, and striking blue typography give this original 1926 poster a powerful graphic expression. The ship is seen from a front angle, with the bow and tall masts emphasizing the sense of size and momentum.
The poster advertises the Scandinavian American Line, the Danish shipping company that connected Scandinavia with New York. The motif tells the story of an era when crossing the Atlantic was done by steamship, and the shipping lines' posters were intended to inspire both wanderlust and trust in the great passenger ships.
The vertical format and the large, open orange field below the ship motif give the poster a distinctive composition. The warm yellow and orange colors provide a beautiful contrast to the blue shades of the sea and the dark silhouette of the ship.
The lithograph is signed Norvil and dated 1926 in the motif. It was printed at Nordisk Nodestik- & Trykkeri in Copenhagen and measures 38.5 × 85 cm.
