About the frame

This 12 mm slim and 18 mm deep wooden frame is made of light brown, stained oak veneer, which gives a calm and more uniform look than solid oak. The surface has an elegant, natural glow where the structure of the wood can still be sensed, but without the larger variations seen in untreated wood. This makes the frame perfect for you if you want a warm and natural wood color, but also a harmonious and uniform finish on all four sides.

The backing board is made of Masonite and fitted with solid fittings, so the frame can easily be hung both vertically and horizontally. In smaller sizes - under 18×24 cm - a support stand is included, so the frame can also be used freestanding on a bookcase, shelf or desk.

The glass and the backing board sit 4 mm back from the front profile, and it is these dimensions that define the size of the frame. So when you choose a frame in e.g. 30×40 cm, it fits exactly a picture or passepartout in the same size.

Choosing glass

The glass affects both the appearance and the durability of your artwork. Whether you want maximum clarity, minimal glare or premium protection, we have a glass type that suits the purpose.

Acrylic glass (plexiglass)
The light and shatter-resistant solution. Perfect for large sizes or places where the frame may be exposed. Once the film is removed, the acrylic glass appears almost as clear as standard glass — with the familiar **reflections** that give the artwork a classic light.

Standard glass
The traditional choice with natural sharpness and a clean, recognizable look. The visible reflections often add extra depth to the artwork and work particularly well in surroundings without direct incoming light.

Non-reflective glass
Ideal for rooms with large windows or sharp light sources. The fine matte surface reduces glare significantly, so the artwork appears clearly from far more angles. The colors are preserved, but are presented in a calmer and more subdued tone.

Museum glass
By far the most exclusive choice. Museum glass is almost invisible, minimizes reflections and protects your artwork against at least 70 % of UV radiation. Colors and details remain sharp for a great many years, and the experience resembles seeing the poster entirely without glass — just with optimal protection.

Passepartout

If there is to be a passepartout between the artwork and the frame, choose the frame in a larger size than the artwork. With a border of approx. 5 cm, a 20×30 cm artwork fits in a 30×40 cm dark oak wooden frame.

There are several color tones to choose from. If you order a size over 81×110 cm, however, the passepartout is only supplied in white or off-white.

Cutout size

The cutout size should be 1 cm smaller than the actual dimensions of the artwork. If your poster measures 61×91,5 cm, you therefore choose a cutout size of 60×90,5 cm. This gives an overlap of around 5 mm on all sides, so the artwork stays in place and mounting is easy. A reveal edge can be added in our Frame Designer.

Outer size

The outer size of the passepartout is always identical to the size of the glass in the frame. Please note that the glass, backing board and passepartout extend approx. 5 mm in under the front edge of the frame.

Number of cutouts

From 0 to 5 cutouts can be cut in the passepartout, and if you want even more, we are happy to help if you contact us. Zero cutouts is an obvious choice when the work is to lie on top of the board, so the edge, signature and print marks stand out.

Position of the cutout

The cutout can be positioned in three ways:

Centered cutout (standard): The artwork is placed in the middle of the passepartout with an equal border at the top and bottom.

Top-positioned cutout: The distance to the top and sides is the same, which gives a visually balanced, wider bottom border.

Free placement: Gives you full control over the placement. You enter the distance from the top and the left side and can continuously see the result in our preview.

All our passepartouts are made of high-quality 1,5 mm acid-free board.
