About the frame

Oak frames with 100% solid, untreated oak cut and assembled into beautiful picture frames in our Danish frame workshop. The frame molding has a 20 mm outer depth, with a 20 mm wide front that extends 5 mm in over the glass and backing board.

If you buy the frame in the formats A0, 100x100, or 100x140 cm, we make them with the deeper oak frame (30 mm), as it is simply best for the large formats.

The dimensions of the frame are the dimensions of the glass and backing board, and thus also the dimensions of the poster that you want to frame.

Glass

The glass in a frame does far more than just protect the artwork. It determines how the colors appear, how clearly the artwork is seen in different lighting conditions, and ultimately how long the picture retains its quality. Here is a walkthrough of the four types of glass you can choose between:

Acrylic glass (plexiglass)
A light and shatter-free solution that is especially suitable in homes with children or in rooms where the frame may be exposed to knocks. When the light hits it, the natural reflections that are also familiar from standard glass appear, but the acrylic glass is far safer and easier to handle.

Standard glass
The classic and most familiar choice of glass. It gives a sharp and faithful color rendering as well as visible reflections, which often add a little depth and a clean, traditional look to the artwork.

Non-reflective glass
The slightly matte surface reduces glare significantly and makes the artwork easier to see from several angles. This glass is particularly well suited to rooms with strong daylight, spotlights, or large window sections, where standard glass would quickly dazzle.

Museum glass
The most exclusive type of glass. Museum glass is almost completely invisible, has a refined, non-reflective finish, and protects the artwork against around 70% of UV radiation. The glass in your home also takes some of the UV rays, after all, so colors and details stay beautiful behind the museum glass. With this type of glass, you get an experience where the picture appears almost as if there were no glass in front of it at all.

Choose the type of glass that best suits both your artwork and the room where the frame will hang – it makes a bigger difference than you might think.

Passepartout

When you choose a passepartout, the size of the frame determines how much space there is around the artwork. The frame must therefore be larger than the artwork – a 40×40 cm poster with an approx. 5 cm passepartout requires, for example, a solid oak frame in 50×50 cm.

We have passepartouts in several different colors. In the large formats above 81×110 cm, however, they are only available in white and off-white.

Inner dimensions

The cutout size should be 1 cm smaller than the actual dimensions of the artwork. If your poster measures 42×59,4 cm, you should therefore choose a cutout size of 41×58,4 cm. This gives an overlap of around 5 mm on all sides, so the artwork stays firmly in place and mounting is easy. A reveal edge can be added in our Frame Designer.

Outer dimensions

On the outside, the passepartout always follows the dimensions of the glass in the frame. Be aware that the glass, backing board, and passepartout are hidden approx. 5 mm under the front edge of the frame all the way around.

Number of cutouts

You can freely choose between 0-5 cutouts in your passepartout. If you would like more, you are welcome to contact us. Zero cutouts are typically used if a work of art is to be placed on top of the board — perfect if you want to highlight the entire edge of the picture, the signature, or the print marks.

Position of the cutout

You have three options to choose between:

Centered cutout (standard): The cutout is positioned symmetrically with the same border width at the top and bottom.

Top-positioned cutout: Equal border at the top and on the sides, while the bottom gets a wider border – a classic gallery solution.

Free positioning: Here you control the position yourself down to the smallest detail. You choose the distance from the top and the left side, while our preview shows what it looks like.

For a solid oak frame, we cut the passepartout from 1,5 mm acid-free board of professional quality.
