About the frame

This 12 mm slim and 18 mm deep wooden frame is made of solid, untreated oak – nothing else. The natural oak gives each frame its very own look, because the grain and structure vary from molding to molding. We select and combine the moldings with great care, so the four sides of the frame harmonize as well as possible – but the natural variation is part of the charm. If you want a more uniform and calm look, you can instead choose one of our veneer frames, e.g. the model in light oak (15×15 mm) or dark oak (12×18 mm).

The backing board is made of hardboard and fitted with hangers, so the frame can be hung both vertically and horizontally. Frames in sizes below 24x30 cm also come with a practical support stand, so they can also stand freely on a shelf or a table.

4 mm behind the front of the frame lie the glass and backing board, and it is the dimensions of these parts that give the format of the frame – and thus also the size of the picture or passepartout you want framed.

If you want a more striking wood look, we also offer a 20 mm wide oak profile, which gives a bolder, more robust look.

Glass

The glass in a frame does far more than you might think at first. It changes both how the artwork is experienced in the room and how well colors, contrasts, and details are preserved over time. When you choose glass, you also choose a visual mood – from sharp and classic to soft and non-reflective – and the degree of protection against light and wear. Here are the four types of glass you can choose between:

Acrylic glass (plexiglass)
Acrylic glass is the safe and light choice. It weighs only a fraction of standard glass and cannot shatter, which makes it an obvious choice for large formats, children's rooms, and rooms where the frame hangs in an exposed spot. When the protective film is removed on both sides, acrylic glass is almost as clear as standard glass – though with the natural reflections that are also familiar from real glass.

Standard glass
If you want the classic clarity and a completely clean look, standard glass is the traditional choice. It gives a sharp and natural color rendering, and the visible reflections often add some depth and life to the artwork, especially in calm surroundings without too much direct light.

Non-reflective glass
Non-reflective glass is perfect in rooms with a lot of daylight, large windows, or direct lighting. The slightly matte surface reduces glare significantly, so the artwork is visible from far more angles. At the same time, it retains a beautiful color rendering, just with a calmer, softer experience.

Museum glass
Museum glass is the most exclusive solution and stands out both visually and technically. It is almost invisible, without the reflections normally associated with glass, and at the same time it protects by at least 70% against UV rays. This means that your posters, art prints, and photographs retain their colors, contrast, and level of detail for many years. The effect is like seeing the artwork with no glass at all – just with far better protection.

Compare the four types of glass

Passepartout

A passepartout requires the frame to be one size larger than what you want to frame. If, for example, you want a border of about 5 cm around a 40×50 cm artwork, the frame must measure 50×60 cm.

The passepartout can be chosen in several colors, so it suits both the artwork and the frame. For formats above 81×110 cm, only white and off-white can be ordered.

Cutout size

Measure the size of the poster as precisely as possible, and choose an inner cutout size that is 1 cm below the actual size. Example: With a passepartout for a poster of 66×88 cm, you should choose a cutout size of 65×87 cm. This gives an overlap of approx. 5 mm all the way around, so the poster sits stably and is easy to mount. If you want a reveal edge, you will find this option in our Frame Designer.

Outer dimensions

The passepartout is cut on the outside to exactly the same dimensions as the glass in the frame. Note that the front edge of the frame covers approx. 5 mm of the glass, backing board, and passepartout along the edge.

Number of cutouts

Choose between 0-5 cutouts in the passepartout – and feel free to contact us if you would like more. A passepartout without cutouts is typically used when a work of art is to be mounted on top of the board, for example to show the entire paper edge or the signature.

Position of the cutout

The cutout can be positioned in three ways:

Centered cutout (standard): The artwork is placed in the middle of the passepartout with an equally wide border at the top and bottom.

Top-positioned cutout: The distance to the top and sides is the same, which gives a visually balanced, wider bottom border.

Free choice: Here you can position the cutout exactly where you want it. You choose the distance from the top and the left side yourself, and can follow what it looks like at all times with our preview.

The passepartout for a solid oak frame is made from 1,5 mm acid-free board of high quality.
