Original German travel poster – Zugspitze, Queen of the Bavarian Alps (1930s)

This rare, original travel poster celebrates the Zugspitze – Germany’s highest mountain and an icon of the Bavarian Alps. At 2,962 meters above sea level, the Zugspitze towers over the Wetterstein Mountains near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where the border between Germany and Austria runs across the mountain’s western peak.

Below the striking peak lies the Zugspitzplatt, a high limestone plateau with caves and remnants of glaciers. On the slopes of the mountain, three glaciers once lay – including Germany’s two largest, the Northern Schneeferner (30.7 ha) and the Höllentalferner (24.7 ha) – symbols of a magnificent but fragile Alpine landscape.

The poster was printed in the 1930s and reflects the adventurous spirit of the time around mountaineering and travel in Germany. A beautiful historical lithograph.
